Face It

Yesterday Pre-Teen Daughter had her first voice lesson (American Idol...here we come!) I sat in and all I can say is FASCINATING. The teach likened singing to not only playing an instrument, but building one too. She commended my kiddo for being brave enough to try something that most people would run from, ie. performing! (Yeah, I'd run!)

Frankly, PT Daughter was nervous, but she did it anyway. Isn't that what it's about? Facing down those hideous fears, knowing that a higher call beckons? I knew PT Daughter was scared, but deep down, I think she also knows that God has gifted her. That's how it is with writing (or anything else you may be 'called' to do.)

I've written non-fiction articles for years, but to open up my mind and pour a made-up story onto the page, in front of strangers, feels kind of like bungee jumping during the prom: exhilarating, crazy, and, frankly, a little embarrassing. But, whoo-hoo, what a fun ride!

What are you facing today?

My daughter takes lessons too! Just wait until her first performance, you might be more nervous than she is, at least that's how it is with me:)

That's funny! I call my 12yo "PreTeen Girl". Actually, it is TeenGirl (14) who wants the voice lessons. PTG is a total introvert; she would prefer computer graphics lessons.

What am I facing today? Someone I thought was a friend is turning out to be not so much of a friend after all. It is scary to stand up to your "enemies" and even more scary to stand up to your friends.

good for her! that is so wonderful!

my sister did voice lessons for years, and she also has a great voice. I do not. at all. Wish i did.

My daughter did voice lessons until she was about twelve or so when her voice teacher said she needed to wait until she got a bit older for her vocal chords to mature. Then she took piano. Then we moved. The piano sits waiting, I think for, my son to get old enough to take lessons.

What am I facing? Laundry, dishes.

What am I fearing? RWA National in Atlanta in a couple of weeks. I want to get the rough draft of my latest book done by then and I have several items of clothing that need to be sewn by then. I'm actually facing the flying of time!

interesting that you would write this just when I've decided to take myself out of the fiction market and go full steam towards non.

Huh.

Good for her! I took voice lessons in college--and despite the fact that I'd been singing for years, it was still a nerve-wracking experience to perform in front of the other students when we had our showcase.

I, too, am delving into a new experience: the new (to me) world of non-fiction. Well, delving would mean I was actually working on that project instead of eyeing it from across the room as though it might try to eat me alive...
