This cracked me up because the novel I'm currently writing involves a development project along the waters's edge. So just yesterday I emailed my architect brother to ask what the "survey tripod thingie" was called.
He wrote back: "Is that a trick question?" Apparently, it really is called a survey tripod (thingie :).

ROTFL---oh that's a funny comic. Who woulda thunk it to be called a Survey Tripod...yeah, gotta keep the "thingie" on there though!
